Qarkabeb, Moroccan Castanets, 9"

Qarkabeb, Moroccan Castanets, 9" Review

Qarkabeb, Moroccan Castanets, 9" Feature

  • Handcrafted Quality, Value Priced
  • Satisfaction Guaranteed! 30-Day Return Policy!
Qarkabeb. Origin Country: Egypt. 5 lbs. Made by Mid-East.

9 1/2" L x 4 1/2" W, almost 1.2 lbs each. Moroccan iron castanets of the Gnawa people. Like most hand cymbals, there are two for each hand. The set comes in its own case with separate zipper compartments for each Qarkabeb. Each Qarkabeb, consists of two 9 1/2" long, flat metal bars with two convex disks at each end. Two bars are linked at one end by a metal ring. Four cords are included for straps for your fingers. To play, slip your thumb and fingers snuggly under the straps. The opening and closing of your hands slaps the cymbals together to produce a loud clank-y sound. With a set of two you can produce rhythm patterns from the very simple to very complex. Gnawa defines both the religious order of a Moroccan Black Muslim group and their music style. Over 900 years ago, slavery, conscription and trade brought people from West Africa to Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. Enslaved people from Ancient Ghana were called Gnawa. The descendents of these enslaved groups are Morocco's most colorful Muslim ethnic group. While they have retained many of the customs, rituals and beliefs of their ancestors, their music is the most preserved trait. Other names for this instrument include: Qaraqsh, Qaraqueb , Qarkeb, Qraqeb, Tiqarqaawen, Shaqahaq, Qarkabeb.

Cooperman Bendir 18"

Cooperman Bendir 18" Review

Bendir 18".
A simple braid of 4 fine dacron snares is threaded through the shell across the back of the drum head to produce the distinctive buzzing sound of this Moroccan style bendir. The player can adjust the tension on these snares, or release them entirely to eliminate the buzzing effect.
Copperman's 4 deep shell is made of solid, single ply 5/16 cherry, steam bent and scarf jointed, and features a precision beveled bearing edge.

The edge of the head is secured into an exterior groove, which is then covered with a colored knit cord. This design minimizes the tendency of the head to pull away from the shell. These drums are available with a goatskin head or a REMO synthetic head.

Cooperman's patented internal tuning technology preserves the traditional appearance of the instrument and allows the player to maintain a complete range of motion, unencumbered by external hardware. Tension on the head is adjusted by the action of an internal, lightweight, moveable bearing member. A Tgrip Allen wrench and tuning instructions are included.

A smoothly rolled 1 thumb hole is strategically placed so that the drum is well balanced and comfortable in your hands.

A hand rubbed, natural finish accentuates the inherent beauty of the wood

A soft padded carrying case is provided with each drum;

Studio 49 RT300 12" Tunable Hand Drum Skin Head Review

12" diameter tunable Studio 49 hand drum with genuine calfskin or goatskin head, and easy-grip wood rim. The sound of a natural skin head has more tone color than a plastic drumhead. However, genuine skin heads are hygroscopic - in other words, you will need to retune them when the room temperature and humidity change.

Medium Gankogui (African Agogo Bells), from Ghana

Medium Gankogui (African Agogo Bells), from Ghana Review

Medium Gankogui (African Agogo Bells), from Ghana Feature

  • Traditional gankogui (African agogo bells); medium size.
  • Rough hewn, with a stacked configuration.
  • Produces a brighter sound than Nigerian agogo bells.
  • Wooden striker included.
Made in Togo and Ghana by blacksmiths using hand bellows and rudimentary forges. Since each bell is hand-forged, each will have its own unique tone. The sizes will also vary slightly: average length 10 to 11", with the smaller bell about 2.75" diameter and the larger bell about 3.5" diameter. Traditionally used to mark the beat for ceremonies, this bell is one of the most important parts of many percussion ensembles. Easily hand held; or ready for stand attachment (use your own stand and hardware). Produces various open and closed sounds; try dampening the bell against your leg while you play. Please note: this agogo bell will be prone to rust, due to the material used and the climate in which it is stored. To remove any rust build-up, the manufacturer recommends using 0000 (very fine) steel wool to rub over the bell for a few seconds; then wipe the bell off with a soft cloth. About 2 minutes per bell is all that is needed to remove any surface rust, but be aware that a reddish tone may remain on the bell (this is not harmful in any way). Alternately, the bell can be painted to prevent rust. It is NOT recommended to rub oil on the surface of the bell to prevent rust, since residual oil can stain clothing and hands when the bell is played. If oil is used, be sure to use a very small amount and wipe it off well once it has been applied.

Schlagwerk Percussion Professional Freehand Frame Drum 2-Layer Goatskin Bodhran

Schlagwerk Percussion Professional Freehand Frame Drum 2-Layer Goatskin Bodhran Review

Schlagwerk Percussion Professional Freehand Frame Drum 2-Layer Goatskin Bodhran Feature

  • six-layered glued beech wood frame, high-quality, double-layered, natural goatskin head
  • controlled and distinct higher-pitched tones, with a somewhat muted bass sound
  • 40 cm (approx. 16 inch) in diameter
  • tuneable with internal tuning screws
  • extra lightweight frame for ease of handling
The Schlagwerk Freehand Drum is distinguished by its unique head design. Instead of the single-layered skin head found on most frame drums, the freehand drum incorporates a double-layered head. The double skin design is a rarely used option in the construction of natural skin frame drums. The result is quite interesting! The double-layered skin produces very controlled and distinctive tones, inviting the player to experiment with different tensions. The freehand drum can be played with both hands while the drum is positioned between the legs. It produces controlled but distinct higher-pitched tones when struck on the frame, and a somewhat muted bass sound when hit closer to the centre. This freehand drum's unique sound sets it apart from all other frame drums. With natural goatskin heads, Schlagwerk's frame drums are remarkable in tonal range sound qualities. These drums reward the player with an exciting variety of sounds when played in the traditional manner. Striking the drums on the frame underscores the unbelievable dynamics of these instruments by producing high and singing tones. Innovative design, high-quality construction, and exceptional tonal characteristics are the hallmarks of this freehand drum. Complementing the high-quality, double-layered, natural goatskin head is a frame made from six glued layers of beech wood. The frame has a diameter of 40 cm (approx. 16"). The head is fully tuneable with tuning screws integrated into the frame. These tuning screws allow the player to precisely tune the drum to his or her preferences. Due to its unique range of sounds, versatility, and compact, lightweight design, the Schlagwerk Freehand Drum can be taken anywhere and used in any musical setting. This is a professional-class drum that any serious drummer or percussionist would be proud to own and play. Tuning key is included.
